In the past nine months along the coast of the Costa Blanca there have been 150 dolphin sightings. The statistics come from the regional environmental council. The dolphins have been seen from the cliffs of Sierra Helada between Benidorm and Albir.
This is welcome confirmation for the area and has given the best sightings along the Valencia coastline. It is also likely to be the best along the Spanish mediterranean coast.
There are a number of floating fish factories and these provide plenty of food which could be attracting the mammals who are now practically permanent residents.
At the same time as the announcement about the dolphins the Sierra Helada board has announced that the Poseidonia grass beds along the coast are recovering which is a very good indicator of the seas recovering. It is thought that supplying special buoys for boats has stopped these boats tearing up the sea bed and so destroyin the grasses.
