Elche Archaeological Relics

MAHE is the Elche Archaeological Museum and it is planning an exhibition of stolen relics recovered by the National Police. The police have handed over over 5000 items to the museum from various operations which the police have carried out.

For two years the police have been targeting crimes against archaeological relics by guarding local sites. The pieces handed over include a collectionof 240 prehistoric arrow heads and flint knives and 260 fragments of pottery from the Islamic period. The latest addition to the collection is about 130 Roman ,medieval and more recent coins. These have all been undergoing preservation work as they were in quite a bad state. This restoration work is often not seen by members of the public but it is a very important part of the work of the museum.

A date for exhibiting the finds has not been set as some of the items are still part of ongoing investigations.
