More than 400 children were evacuated from their school at Mislata near Valencia last week.A gas pipe was broken during routine work at a nearby care centre. It was a National Police patrol that noticed the broken pipe and alerted the local police and the Fire Service. The gas supply was turned off straight away.
The Fire Service evacuated the children from their school. The children had practised fire drills many times and so it was done quickly and efficiently. In fact the children thought that it was all great fun, which of course it was not. They were kept outside for almost an hour until the pipe was mended. The children were in no danger and consequently the parents were not informed until the end of the day.
The Mayor of the town congratulated everyone involved in the episode, from the firemen to the staff and children. It is still not known how the pipe became broken and an investigation is now underway to find out whether it was human error or just an accident.
