Spanish lottery sellers are becoming concerned about what they perceive as a “backdoor” privatisation of their businesses. The concern has come on the back of the fact that the Government has announced that it is considering opening up part of the National Lottery to the private sector, which would mean that ticket selling machines could be seen in commercial and other centres as well as the designated kiosks of today.
This has come at one of the busiest times of the year for lottery ticket sellers ,what with “El Gordo” Christmas Lottery.Spanish Lottery is big business and dates back 250 years .It is run by the Director General of Lotteries and State Bets. The Director has denied any form of privatisation is taking place. He has said that all that is being done is the introduction of new technologies in ticket sales.
