The Jardin de San Esteban in Murcia is the site of the remains of a Moorish city. These remains it appears are to be dismantled in order to make an underground carpark.
kThe remains were discovered during the initial excavations to build the carpark and the findings include six palaces,50 homes and a main street , a sewage network and a small mosque which dates back to the 13th century.Human remains were found near the mosque.
The regional department for cultureĀ has decided to dismantle the most important discoveries and to rebuild them at ground level. They will then continue with the carpark construction.
This decision has not been accepted by everyone and the controversy continues. One comment from an eminent professor sums up the feeling when he stated “The remains of a Moorish city are to be destroyed for the sake of a useless carpark”
Another person thought that it was a disgrace that our politicians cared so little for the cultural heritage of the area. The area is believed to be a part of the outskirts of Murcia city which was destroyed by flooding in the 15th century.
