Alicante’s award winning MARQ museum has had dozens of objects on display from the Bronze Age,all found in the Vega Baja. The pieces are from the Agaric culture which dates from 2,300 BC to 1500 BC.They were unearthed at sites in Orihuela,San Isidro,Callosa de Segura and Elche .
Also in the exhibition is the jewellery which makes up the Treasure of Abia de la Obispalia, which has been returned to Spain for the first time from the British Museum. These pieces were found in a village near Cuenca and were shipped to London.
The exhibition has been put on in memory of the 100th anniversary of the death of the Jesuit priest who was the pioneer of Spanish archaeology. At the beginning of the 1900’s he created the Valencia region’s first archaeological museum at the Colegio de Santa Domingo in Orihuela. He also started excavations at Bronze Age sites in San Anton in Orihuela and Laderas del Castillo in Callosa de Segura. These artifacts on display permit the public to envisage life in the area over 4000 years ago. There is no writing or art but these artifacts speak loudly about the life that existed at the time. The exhibition runs until February.
