The Spanish national government is trying to steer the economy away from the building industry into a more sustainable economy based on other industries. However Orihuela is the latest town to give the go-ahead to more building.A huge building project is being mooted for the slopes of the protected Sierra Escalona mountain range in Orihuela Costa. It includes 4000 new homes. This seems to be an attempt to build its way out of the economic down-turn.It was the ruling PP party which has given the green light for the project and it follows closely behind Torrevieja council which has agrred to the building of 8000 new homes.Surely these people must have learned something from this economic crisis!
There is an old saying which says that fools continue to do the same things over and over but expect a different outcome each time.It just doesn’t happen. The Green Party seems to have got the message and has slammed the decisions being made.
Ecological groups are asking the regional government to place the zone where building is proposed, inside the natural park and to protect it totally. They want it as a bird sanctuary. To date the borders of the natural park have not been defined by the regional government.Let us hope that commonsense will prevail and someone will veto this plan.
