Turron is the traditional Spanish sweetie.It is particularly traditional at Christmas.There are two types,one soft from Jijona and one brittle and hard from Alicante.
Christmas is the time for food all over the world and Spain is no exception.The delicious nougat type swwet called Turron is sold everywhere.Christmas in Spain would not be the same without it.It is a traditional after dinner treat.
It was originally made by the Moors,using local ingriedients such as almonds,honey,pine nuts,dried fruit,coconut and many other things.In fact the variety of the sweet meats have rown and grown.It is however only Jijona and Alicante which have the Denominacion de Origin–the true sign of quality,
Nowadays turron can be covered in chocolate,have liquers added,whisky and can even have savoury tastes.However it continues to be a traditional Christmas gift and a very welcome one too.
