It was World Diabetes Day recently and the ex-president of the Spanish Diabetes Federation spoke of the number of Spanish people who suffer from this condition. In fact well over 3 million people in Spain are estimated to suffer the disease and a million suffer it but do not know that they have it.The figure in Spain is incresing by 5% year on year.
There is also variation in the percentage of people who suffer from diabetes region by region. The highest percentage is in Andalucia,Murcia and the Canary Islands at 12% of the population. In the Basque Country and Madrid it is only 6%.
It is hoped now to improve education about the disease and how it may be prevented.Hopefully this could reduce the incidence.Diabetes is a major cause of blindness in the world and also a cause of renal failure.Obesity and a sedentary way of life increses the risk of developing the condition.Early diagnosis is important as some of these conditions are manifesting themselves before a diagnosis has been made. They are recommending that all adults over the age of 45 should have a simple blood test on an annual basis.People who have a family history of the disease should have this test earlier in their lives.
