There are people in many towns across Spain where there is a big problem paying for food to put on the table.I Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca the Social welfare Council and several NGO’s have put into place a project which will do just that–put food on the table. It is called Torrevieja Food for Solidarity and it will provide food and other vital necessities for local people.
The local associations normally collect, pack and also distribute food but now the foods will be taken to a central “social catering” area which will be located in premises donated by local businessmen where they will be cooked and packed and then distributed. At the moment there are more and more people who are unemployed and in need of basics.
People who know about the scheme can contact any NGO and place a request. The NGO will assess the individual needs and then send them to the centre to collect the food.It is thought that over 150 people will benefit from the project which is in a three month trial phase.Several local businesses are donating food.
