Moraira is a small town/village on the Costa Blanca. It was a fishing village with some vine growing thrown in for good measure. Now it is a tourist village and full of retired expats. It has been called”God’s waiting room!”It is a good place to live because the climate is wonderful as are the people, the coastline and just about everything else.
Christmas is a strange time here as many people return to their “home country” to visit family and friends. However many people come here to spend their Christmas too. Many of these visitors want to eat out on Christmas Day and so the restaurants that open do very well. The Chinese restaurants are very popular because they don’t break the bank. Then of course there are those that pace themselves in the “gourmet’ class and they can charge an arm and a leg.
For those who choose to stay at home it is now possible to produce a traditional Christmas lunch with all of the trimmings .Nine years ago this wasn’t possible.Crackers? What are they?Cranberries?Well you still can’t get them!!Christmas puddings can cost a lot of money–last year a smallish pudding set us back almost ten euros.Christmas cards, tinsel,Christmas trees of the “real” variety are also everywhere.Today the weather has been wonderful, warm and balmy.Friends even talking of going for a Christmas dip in the sea.So walking the dogs just wearing a thin sweater and feeling quite warm when doing it isn’t a very British feel for Christmas.Having said that who wants to be perishing with cold and wrapped up in anoraks and boots? This is why we choose to live in Spain.
