Axarquia near Malaga on the Costa del Sol has a large number of foreign residents and this is now being reflected in the sort of amenity available. The typical English “Farmers Markets” are becoming particularly popular on the Costa del Sol.
These markets offer many items and services which are not available in the local supermarkets. They were originally set up in the UK to provide a selling point for farmers to sell their produce and people do like to buy local fresh goods.
In Spain the idea was the same and alongside those who want to sell local fruit and vegetables there are those who want to sell such things as speciality teas and other things typical of the home country.Sadly the stalls have been stopped from selling food in the form of pre-cooked items and now they are seeking licenses to do this legally.
The markets also provide a meeting place for people to meet with friends from their own country and use their own language more freely. They can also discover people from their own country who provide services that they need such as sewing or beauty care. The need is obviously there because there are waiting lists for people to have a stall and at the one in Axarquia there are already sixty stalls working at the market.
