In Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca as everywhere else in Spain, the complete ban on smoking in enclosed spaces is due to become law in 2010. This is causing great concern for them all, especially during the winter months.

The Health Minister,Trinidad Jiminez has confirmed that all premises must be non-smoking.This will not extend to open-air areas such as restaurant terraces and sporting stadiums,where smoking will still be allowed.This means that if you are sitting next to a smoker at a soccer match you will still have your lungs full of passive smoke.

There is a way around all of this of course, as there usually is. They have been around for a while and now they are more needed in Spain than anywhere. What might this be ,you ask? It is the electronic cigarette. A company called InLife is just about to launch an electronic cigarette into the UK and soon it will also launch them into the rest of Europe. Spain is the next country on their list.

Electronic cigarettes are not about “giving up smoking”. They are there to give some control back to the smoker. They allow them to smoke where they choose to smoke, be it in a pub, restaurant, aeroplane or in your own home (how many smokers do you know that have to smoke in the garden?). You can choose your nicotine strength, there is none of that seriously dangerous tobacco smoke and the carcinogens like arsenic and formaldahyde that is found in it, no smell, no ash and the “smoke” is just water vapour.The even better part is that you save money too!

The Health Minister is quite right to say that their policy is to protect the health of the population of Spain from the carcinogenic effects of tobacco. Cigarettes do kill people and do affect general health. Pubs and clubs in the UK are closing down because of the ban there and Torrevieja landlords are right to be concerned . However there is no need for such concern when there is an answer to their problem, they can sell elecronic cigarettes to their customers and everyone will be happy. There is no such thing as “passive smoking ” with these devices, they only provide the smoker with what they want-the nicotine. The vapour produced is no more dangerous than the steam produced from your cup of coffee!
