Alicante City is showing its disappointment over the fact that the Valencia High Court has halted the plan to develop 4 million square metres of land north of the city of Alicante.The plan included 13,000 new homes and one of the largest shopping centres in Europe.
The reason behind this judgement was the fact that quite understandably they were worried about water supplies.The promoter,Enrique Ortiz and the Alicante Town Hall will place an appeal against the decision and it is thought that a final decision may not be heard for at least two years.
Ikea was to be a part of this huge shopping mall and now the Mayor of Alicante has asked to meet with representitives of Ikea with the possibility of offering them a new site in the city.
It is vital that Spain begins to look at such projects with a long term rather than a short term view.Yes it would be good to start building such a project becauseof the levels of unemployment which exist at the moment.However supplying such a project with water way into the future may be a totally impossible task.
