The founder and president of Caritas in Calpe on the Costa Blanca has said that this is the worst year he can remember for people needing help and support with just feeding themselves.Caritas in Calpe looks after 300 families .They provide them with a bag of food a week and also a 25 euro voucher to spend at a local supermarket.
The decline in the tourist industry and the construction industry has left many on the breadline.Consequently local charities are becoming more and more important in supporting local services. The Calpe Charity Shop has donated 2000 euros and Benissa Lions have donated a second 500 euros. It appears that the Lions have also given 750 euros to Caritas in Benissa. In Benissa they just had no food left in the store. The situation is quite terrible right across the coast.
Caritas does see a conflict of interest when local sports clubs have grants of thousands of euros a year ,while organisations such as Caritas only receive a council grant of 500 euros.
Not only is Caritas supplying food but they are also paying such bills as electricity and rents to stop people being thrown out onto the streets.
