Chris Bryant is the Minister for Europe and the Foreign and Commonwealth office and he visited Torrevieja last week.He was there to talk with expats about the various problems that they are experiencing. He was accompanied by the Ambassador to Spain,Giles Paxman plus a variety of Embassy and Consulate officials. The meeting took place at the Cabo Cervera Hotel and it took the form of a question and answer session. The questions were submitted before the meeting .Mr Bryant has been the Minister for Europe for only four months. He said that he wanted to hear first hand just what people were experiencing during this economic crisis.
He answered questions relating to the Valencian healthcare issues and virtually and understandably said that there was nothing that could be done from the “outside”,people had to become involved and work for change from the “inside”.People need to show how they feel through the ballot box.
On the subject of the “land grab”laws he agreed that these were wrong and that people should not lose their homes. If they had to lose them then they should be offered compensation. If there is no money available for compensation then the easiest solution is to legalise them.He said that he would be putting pressure on the Spanish government over this issue. The meeting went on to discuss pensions and other benefits .he said that he would go back and write a report for his boss,David Milliband.
