A recent report has said that when the organisation audited the accounts of town halls across Alicante Province they were generally suffering a great deal of financial hardship. This has been caused mainly by the fall of the construction industry. They are no longer able to invest in the public services that people have come to expect and the longer that the economic crisis continues the worse it will get.
They have calculated that the average council is operating with a deficit of around 10 million euros. In Castellon Province the working deficit is more like 23 million euros ,while in Valencia they are in the black by just under a million.Paying bills is another factor and in Alicante Province they take 3 months to pay their bills. In Castellon it is two months. It makes one wonder just why people choose to do business with these town halls.
Banco de España has announced that public sector debt has been rising since 2004Once again the reliance on the building sector has been blamed ,Another building boom would solve the problem but as this isn´t likely to happen then the debt will just go on incresing.
A league table of council debts has been published and Calpe is second on that list and Benidorm is third.
