Fundacion Equanimal is an animal rights group which staged a protestagainst bullfighting in Madrid recently.The protest was unusual in that the protestors were all naked.They lay on the ground and formed a huge SOS in the Plaza Callao.They were armed with spears and carried fake blood to try and get their message across.The group is protesting against the decision by Valencia,Madrid and Murcia governments to designate bullfighting and bull running “of international cultural heritage value”.They feel very strongly that such a decision is “pathetic”.They also claim that 70% of the Spanish population is against these activities.They also claim that 20% care nothing about the decision and therefore it is only 10% of the population that actually wants to continue and support it .
They reckon that the administrative process to gain such status would take at least three years and if it was recognised then the European Union would provide grants to Spain if the new status was achieved.They are arranging more protests in Madrid at the end of march.
