The headteachers of schools in Alicante province and the National Police anti-drug units met together in 2009 to discuss the problems and possible solutions to dealing with the selling od illegal substances in and around schools.

The discussions covered just where the drugs were being bought and sold and the headteachers wanted to know what the police were doing to stop it happening.Figures in 2009 did show an overall decline in the sale of banned substances around schools and colleges.Over the year they did make four arrests and closed down two selling points.In 2008 the police did not detect any selling points.During 2009 they did step up their vigilance and feel that they have had good results.

What they do not seem to realise is that kids in schools have access to drugs from so many different sources.The police are also targeting leisure centres that are used by schoolchildren and they have decommissioned 17 sales points in 2009 as opposed to 35 in 2008.The number of people arrested for the selling of drugs did go up marginally from 2008 to 2009.

The Alicante sub-delegate rates the drop in drug sales to increased vigilance by the police.Of course it could be that kids just don´t have the money because they can´t get weekend jobs and their parents could also be out of work.So the economic climate could also be a reason.
