This was sailing with a difference.Earlier in May SAMM ( Sailing Association Mar Menor) in Murcia held races with a differnce. They joined forces with Fundacion Tambien, the Spanish National Organisation for Disabled Sports,so that able bodied and disabled could sail together.
It appears that empty wheelchairs lined the jetty of the CAR Infanta Cristina Sailing College in Los Narejos. They had been abandoned by their former occupants who were so delighted to get into the boats ans show their sailing skills.
There were 19 boats in eight different classes. They tested their abilities around a square course ,using the wind to gain individual advantage. The trial of integrating able bodied and disabled was so successful that they intend to continue to do it .They all enjoyed the racing and alsojust getting to know each other better.
The coaches for the disabled sports manned a safety boat ,just to ensure that none of the boats veered too close to the rocks. Now Samm is planning an event with the UK Disabled Sailing Association specifically for Weta trimarans. This regatta will take place in September. This will be the first time that such an event will be staged in the world.
