Since its introduction in 2006 the legislation banning smoking in public places in Spain has been ignored and resisted by every which way possible. The main reason behind the most recent delays in its implementation came from the lobbying of interested parties on behalf of the retail hotel and restaurant industry citing the loss in income at a time of recession as being wholly detrimental to an economic recovery in Spain.
