As Mayor of Benidorm,Augustin Navarro conducted his first gay marriage last week.As councillor in opposition he actually conducted 12 such marriages.
Gay marriages have been legal in Spain since 2005 after a parliamentary ruling approved the modification of the Civil Code. This followed the Socialist governments campaign which was led by President Zapatero.
For the marriage to be valid then one of the partners has to be Spanish. However two non.Spanish people may marry if they are both Spanish residents.
This made Spain the third country in the world to recognise gay marriages and to give them the same status as heterosexual marriages..Spain followed Holland and belgium and were closely followed by Canada.
The Partido Popular party still proclaim the “unconstitutionality” of same sex marriages.Since the law was passed there have been 16,000 gay marriages as compared to almost a million heterosexual marriages.
