Lleida city council has made a decision to ban the burkha in public buildings.Now Muslims in the Lleida have presented six written complaints to the council over this decision.
The Wantani Association for Freedom and Justice has said that should the council not reply then they will take the matter to court.They say it is a violation of their rights and that the Spanish constitution does not permit such a breach of human rights.It is also discrimination in their view.They see it as discrimination against women.
The association would be happy for women who wear the burkha to uncover their faces when they enter a public building ,to identify themselves and for them then to be able to cover themselves again.Women who refuse to do this would be exited from the building.At the moment such women could be fined 600 euros for wearing a burkha in a public building.
The association is also asking for a new mosque to be built as the old one was closed because of overcrowding.They feel that they fulfil their obligations to the city and respect the laws and therefore feel that the council should respect their traditions.
