Torrevieja Natural History Museum will benefit eventually from what is thought to have been a tragic accident.
The head of a baby sperm whale was discovered floating in the sea off Torrevieja. It is thought that the marine mammal was the victim of a propeller from a large boat which had sliced the head off.
The remains of the animal were removed from the sea and taken to the Natural History Museum where the head was buried in a marked grave. The reason for this is to allow all of the flesh on the head to decay.Eventually only the bones will be left. The head will then be prepared and presented as an exhibit for the museum.
Last June a full size specimen was washed up onto a Torrevieja beach .This took a great deal more effort to remove to the museum, where it was examined.
Hundreds of people eventually turned up on the beach to watch the municipal workers remove the head.
