The British forces sank a German U-boat off the shores of Calpe on the Costa Blanca 69 years ago.Now the wreck has been photographed 85 metres down in the sea.
Divers from the El Campello based Greenwich Foundation were the first to take photographs. The Foundation is a non-profit making charity and their aim is to investigate the sea bed of the Costas for scientific , historical and cultural purposes.
At 85 metres the sea is very murky but the submarine was easily identified as a U77 which was dive bombed by the RAF on March 28 1943.
In the first attack the submarine was only slightly damaged but the British followed up with more aeroplanes and in the second attack it was fatally damaged. Now the foundation is making a documentary about the discovery.
