It is a sorry state when farmers in the Benidorm , Costa Blanca , area have to leave their mandarin oranges on their trees because there is no profit in picking them.In fact they would have to pay more to the pickers that they would get in revenue for selling them. They are only being offered a euro a crate and a crate will hold almost 20 kilos. That is derisory.
They also have to irrigate the land and have other overheads such as spraying with insecticides. It is just not cost effective to pick them.Maybe they should sell them directly to the public and charge them a reasonable rate per kilo.
It appears that export to the European market has dried up because of the economic crisis. There is plenty of fruit but no buyers. It must be tragic to see your crops rot on the trees after it has been such a good growing season. Many farmers are contracted to a coop and so they are unable to go off at a tangent and decide to sell directly to the public.
