Spain´s nuclear waste was going to be processed in the Valencia region but now that has all changed. The nuclear waste disposal unit is going to be built in central Spain outside a tiny village called Villar de Cañas.
Since the announcement the town hall has received thousands of applications for jobs. The building of the installation will take 5 years and will employ over 500 people.Once it is up and running it will employ over 150 people.
The situation has stunned the Mayor of Villar who has said that he knew that there was a serious economic crisis in Spain but he had no idea just how badly so many people were hit because of it.Many are in dire financial situations.
It is not only the fact that people are seeking employment , the property market in the area has also had a huge boost.People want to go and live there for some reason. Some want to open businesses in the hope of an increased population in the area.
When the previous government were seeking suitable sites for a nuclear cemetery there was an outcry of “No” from all and sundry but now the climate has changed and localities are able to see the economic possibilities of the installation which will cost 700 million to build.
The local towns will also benefit from an annual grant from the government and Villar will receive 2.4 million annually.More than half the Villar population is over retirement age and so the Mayor is hoping to use some of the money to build a retirement home.
