Spanish News | Bottleneck In The Skies

Spanish skies could become the bottleneck of Europe according to Eurocontrol , the organisation which controls the flow of air traffic in European air space. This will happen between 2012 and 2014 according to the report.

Spain wants to become part of the European “one sky ” programme.Eurocontrol says that the Spanish airport authority , AENA ,  would not be able to cope with the increase in air traffic and that it was not yet good enough in handling flight delays.

Seemingly a plan presented to Eurocontrol about its air capacity did not match the criteria set out for the “one sky” programme  and their plan for dealing with delays did not meet the criteria either.

The level of delays in Spain are higher than those set by Eurocontrol. The targets set for dealing with delays were also not matching those set out by Eurocontrol. They felt that the targets set out by AENA were not very ambitious.

AENA places the problems that they are having on the part privatisation of airports and the restructuring of air traffic controlling systems which is being privatised. These are causing the problems when trying to meet Eurocontrol criteria.
