The Benidorm town council on the Costa Blanca has stated that its commercial licensing department has dealt with over a 1000 applications for opening new premises in 2011.
This , said the councillor in charge , equated to the opening of three new commercial businesses a day in Benidorm.
Fourty percent of the licenses awarded were issued to bars , restaurants , ice cream parlours and sweet shops.
Most applications were processed within 20 to 30 days of being received while those which required special environmental licenses took between 3 and 6 months.
In 2009 the number of applications was just 909 while in 2010 they were just over 1000 and this last year they have once again increased just slightly over 2010.The licenses gave the council an income of almost a million euros as of the 1153 applications , 956 were granted , 79 were cancelled ,57 were denied and the rest are awaiting a decision.Benidorm has been issuing commercial licenses since 1957.
