Women in Alicante province can go to Elche general hospital , on the Costa Blanca , if they have been fitted with the PIP ( Poly Implant Prosthesis ) breast implants and have concerns about them.Elche has been chosen as the hospital to deal with the problems.There have been warnings that the implants could rupture and cause inflammatory reactions.
The Spanish agency which overseas products such as these has recommended that women see their GP´s to assess whether they require removal.
One hospital in each of the Valencia region provinces has been designated to give advice and treatment if necessary.Over 600 women received these implants because of reconstructive surgery after having cancer.Elche hospital will also see women who had the implants fitted privately and who for whatever reason cannot return to the private clinic.PIP implants stopped being used in Spain in 2010.
In the UK the health authorities have told women that there is no risk of cancer and that routine removal is not necessary.The British government will remove implants from NHS patients who had them fitted by the NHS for medical reasons.They are expecting the private sector to do the same.
