Valencia Region | Invasive Species

The National Police and the Guardia Civil have stated this week that at least 25% of all pet shops in the Valencia region are selling invasive exotic animals and are breaking current legislation concerning such animals.

The two police forces have checked 65 pet shops , 28 in Alicante , 30 in Valencia and 7 in Castellon and of these 16 were discovered to have been breaking the law.

They discovered 140 samples of the Red Eared Slider turtle from Florida , USA , 13 examples of the St Helena Waxbill and two examples of the Monk or Kramer´s Parakeet. All of these species are banned because if they escape they harm native species and the environment.

The parakeet is capable of breeding should it escape and is a seed eating bird.It can devastate seed crops and will oust native seed eating birds.

The Valencia regional government is coming down more heavily on this illegal business and the Seprona branch of the Guardia Civil and the National Police will be doing more checks and will also be tracking down the importers and breeders.
