The Benidorm and Costa Blanca hotel Association ( Hosbec ) has stated that in 2011 the hotel occupancy rate in Benidorm was 80% which was in fact on a par with the rates in 2005 which was pre-the Spanish economic crisis.
The figure for 2011 was 6.5% higher than for 2010 and they had actually surpassed all expectation. The Hosbec president also said that although the hotel occupancy rate was up , spending in general was down. This led to much lower profit margins for the hotels and for businesses which depend on tourists spending money.
The hotel sector in 2011 had to do much more to attract their customers ,this means special deals to draw them in and keep them. Many hotels offer all inclusive packages and this in turn means that local restaurants miss out.Equally the hotel industry is still laying people off and the increase in tourist numbers did nothing to stop this. The current numbers of unemployed in Benidorm from the hotel sector stands at over 6000 which double that of 2006.
