Valencia Region | Education

Schools along the Costa Blanca and across the Valencia region are all in dire straits over many financial issues and one of the most pressing is the non-payment of electricity bills by the Valencia government. The recent demonstrations in Alicante have highlighted all of the concerns that teachers, parents and students have about their educational system.

Now power is being cut off in some schools. Both light and heat are threatened and their are having to be reductions in the use of both at the moment in an effort to save on them.

A secondary school just outside Denia may run out of funds to pay bills by the end of February. There are over 100,000 euros owed in that one school. It includes the last six months of 2011.The headteacher at the school has said that if Valencia does not pay soon then they will have run out of resources. Some teachers are having to use their own laptops to power the whiteboards.

In Benissa the secondary school is in arrears by 75,000 euros and 16,000 of that is for materials such as paper and books. There have been teacher meetings and protests in La Xara, Javea , Benissa , Calpe, Pedreguer and Denia , all culminating in the 50,000 people protesting in Alicante.
