Youngsters from Laude, Lady Elizabeth School in the Jalon Valley had a special history lesson last week .
The year 4 students are studying the Romans and as part of their course they visited the Akraocio Centre in Guadalest where they learned many things in a practical way .
They looked at and made their own mosaics and also a “bula ” which is a clay pendant . They saw many other artifacts as the centre is a branch of the MARQ museum in Alicante .
Before they left they became Roman soldiers under the command of Paco the Monitor , they had swords and shields and looked the real thing .
Year Three youngsters in Javea study the local area and as part of their lessons they took a trip to look at Montgo and Cap San Antoni .
Whilst at the Cap they sketched the Arenal and searched for crystals and also enjoyed themselves .
Meanwhile in Year 10 and 11 they have been gaining experience of the World of Work and have had placements in Ondara , Denia , Javea and Calpe , covering a wide range of occupations .
The college students have also taken part in a production of the musical ” Annie ” while others sat back and enjoyed the performance . This took place at the Benitachell Arts Centre .

Under the direction of two English actors , the Actors Studio will be performing an evening of theatre .
The students have been taught confidence building exercises ,plus acting and performing skills .
The Actors Studio opened a year ago and now the students will be allowed to show off their talents .
The performance will be extremely eclectic and should appeal to everyone . It will take place in La Nucia on November 22 .

A private clinic in Benidorm has been ordered by the regional health authority to stop carrying out medical tests on animals after a report was sent to them by the Alicante Veterinary college .
It appears that the clinic was also offering to do tests on people’s pets . This service came to light when there was a conference in Calpe concerning tumours in domestic animals .
A vet at the conference claims that he was offered the service via this particular clinic .

The clinic has now been ordered to pass over all documentation and will be inspected to see if it has the correct authorisation .
A large quantity of cash has been set aside in the 2009 budget by the Ministry for Infrastructure and Transport for major development works in the Marina Alta and Javea is due to receive 22 million for the expansion of the port .
It would also include an upgrade of the marina in Denia and a major piece of work in Calpe town centre plus repairs to Les Bassetes area in Benissa .
In reality the 38 million euros set aside would barely cover 3 % of the costs .

The announcement about the Javea project has really caused concern to those who are lobbying against it . It now seems that despite the protests , the regional government is going ahead with it .
Rustic properties in Calpe could see their IBI taxes rise by 300 % .
So warns the opposition parties on the council . The tax councillor from the previous administration is back at his job , which the opposition allege that he couldn’t do well when the PP were in power .
The town has a debt of almost 14 million euros which has to be paid . The opposition say that the previous mayor made no provision for recession and instead generated a huge deficit which will have to be paid off over years .
Increases in refuse taxes and such like are not going to pay these debts any more quickly .

Palmaconcerts have started their programme , which runs through until May 2009 .
Last week there was a very classy jazz concert at the Diamante Beach hotel in Calpe .
The George Watts Trio performed at a Halloween concert entitled Jazz Ligero . Piano , tenor sax and double bass , they played all of the jazz standards to an audience that responded very enthusiastically .
It was great jazz performed by a very professional trio .
Last Saturday a man fell and hit his head as he was climbing Calpe Rock .
The fall caused him to lose consciousness and luckily someone found him and called the emergency services , thinking that he had suffered a heart attack .
A rescue helicopter was sent out and he was airlifted to Villajoyosa hospital .
The cause of his fainting appeared to relate to a digestive disorder .
The salt lake in Calpe had a major clean -up last week when more than 160 volunteers took part .
The sea bed was cleaned by 120 divers from a variety of clubs .
The other volunteers cleaned the surrounding areas .
More than 3000kilos of waste was removed , which was an excellent beginning to a massive task .
Calpe cemetery had some murals painted on the walls in 1999 and these are being renovated .
The wall , which is 10m high and 14 m long and as well as the paintings needing retouching , they also need cracks repaired .
A free bus service has been laid on to ferry people back and fore to the cemetery .
