The warning is not only for the Costa Blanca but also for the whole of the Mediterranean coastline .
During a reent visit to Alicante at the ” Living Planet 2008 ” a report was given stressing that town plans should be taking climate change into their planning .
The negative effects of low water resources , higher temperatures and higher sea levels just cannot be ignored in town plans for coastal regions , is the message .
The new Ley de Costas is causing a great deal of concern for those with houses close to shore lines .
Already homes are being demolished on the Costa Brava and Costa del Sol and all of the Costa’s are at risk .
Consequently a group has been formed by those people who are affected and they have met with environment officials in Madrid to try to find a solution to the thousands of properties which could be demolished .
They can be found all along the Spanish coastline as they have now been assessed as being within the boundries and subject to demolition .

Recent storms in the Atlantic city of Cadiz left it in a state of devastation .
Luckily the storm struck at low tide , otherwise it could have been even worse .
There was flooding in many buildings in the city , the sea walls were very badly battered and more than 100 trees were uprooted .
One of the lifeguard towers was blown over and the local hospital was inundated with patients .
Even the town hall and the police station didn’t escape the damage caused by the storm .

Last week a man from La Nucia paddle -surfed across the Strait of Gibraltar in an international tournament .
It was the first time for this to happen . This is a newly invented sport which involves rowing whilst standing on a large surf board .
It is a sport which is very popular in the USA but is virtually unknown in Spain .
The water in the Strait was quite rough on the day of the event and in the end only three people participated and it took them 2hrs 30 mins to complete the 20 km crossing .

” Una Receta para el desastre “is the title for the latest campaign being mounted by Greenpeace . Their boat ” Arctic Sunrise ” sailed into Cadiz last week with the aim of educating the public about the fact that many endangered fish are being sold in out supermarkets
They are urging the public not to buy these fish . The campaign is backed by the report showing that not one major supermarket in Spain has a conscience about selling such fish . They do not label the fish or give its place of origin .
Greenpeace accuse the supermarkets of being accomplices in the destruction of marine life .
They have drawn up a league table of the best and worst supermarkets for this behaviour and it is Lidl which comes out on top with Mercadona as the one at the bottom .

Those who live in Southern Spain are already feeling the effects of climate change according to a study by the regional government of Andalucia .
Low rainfall and high temperatures increase respiratory problems and allergies generally .Air which is blown from North Africa blows pollen and dust which pollutes the air of the region .
These effects are likely to increase in the future as temperatures rise even more . It is estimated that by the end of the century the average temperature in Andalucia will go up by 8 degrees .
Another big risk , according to the study , will be diseases transmitted by bugs and ticks .
Sixteen horses have died of starvation while in the care of a British woman in the town of Medina Sidonia near Cadiz.
Another 36thoroughbred horses are so ill that they may also need to be destroyed . The woman is now facing prosecution fron the animal welfare branch of the Guardia Civil.
The woman has lived in Spain for many years and the cruelty only came to light after a neighbour reported that they were fed up looking at dead horses .
The herd of horses was worth more than half a million euros and it seems that food and vet bills had not been paid for many months .Animal rights activists are trying to save those who are still alive and re-home them . The law in Andalucia states that they must be destroyed .

Spain has the chance to mend its ways in terms of development of its wonderful coastline .The Costa de la Luz is still in possession of unspoiled beaches without the concrete jungles that usually back them.
If you visit La Palmar you will be confronted by a wonderful tree lined beach and it is a beach that attracts all of the people who still enjoy this beach in its natural state . There are few palm roofed cafe’s and that is it .
Now there is a battle beginning between developers and those who wish it to stay as it is .
The mayor of Verjer is about to ban the small beach cafe’s and clamp down on the camper vans parked at the back of the beach—-is this the beginning of the end ?
Permission has already been given a little further up the coast , to build two hotels and a 9hole golf course . 11.000people have already signed petitions against this project .
The Los Merinos project in Ronda has been shelved but is this lack of money or is it environmental ? Cynics will say that it is the latter .

A man drowned on the Atlanterra beach area of Tarifa last week and the Cruz Roja have been protesting about the lack of safety precautions on the beaches of Tarifa . They protested outside the town hall and the police had to disperse them as it was an illegal gathering .
It seems that there are only three watch towers on 24 km of beach and they are 400m apart. These watch towers are essential for public safety.Last year there were 10 watch towers . They believe that the lack of towers was partly responsible for the death at Atlanterra beach .
A Frenchman died while kite surfing at Valdevaqueros and it is thought that because he was inexperienced he became entangled in the ropes and drowned .
